Yaz, Yazmin & Ocella Lawsuits

Yaz, Yazmin and Ocella are all birth control medications that are involved in serious lawsuits.   These products cause blood clots, strokes and other problems.  These products have design defects and marketing defects similar to Stryker Hip Cases, Nuva-Ring Lawsuits and Topamax lawsuits.  Many of the lawsuits involve a number of heart and blood disorders experienced by Yaz, Yazmin and Ocella users.  The FDA has ruled that Bayer exaggerated some of the various drugs’ uses in their marketing and advertising campaigns.  Bayer also ignored some of their side effects. There are so many lawsuits that the courts have sent the cases to multidistrict legislation (MDL) to resolve the related claims.

An FDA panel in late 2008 voted in favor of strengthening the warnings on the YAZ birth control pill labels. The FDA’s most serious label, which is the black-box warning, is now displayed on all of the Yaz and Yasmin packaging.  The warnings warn women who smoke about an increased risk of serious cardiovascular side effects that could occur if they use the drug.

The claims in the cases involve negligence, strict product liability, fraudulent concealment, fraud and deceit.  In October 2012, Bayer settled thousands of Yaz, Yazmin and Ocella cases for $750 million. There are many cases that are continuing through the courts.

These drugs have caused many problems.  These include:

  • Heart attacks
  • Strokes
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Blood clots in the legs
  • Pulmonary embolisms
  • Lung blockages
  • Gallbladder disease

The severe reactions to Yaz and Yasmin are caused by the drug drospirenone, which is a form of synthetic progesterone.  Drospirenone can create high levels of potassium in the patient’s body.  This can cause which may cause serious health problems.  Some of these problems are heart arrhythmias, strokes, electrolyte imbalances, hyperkalemia, gallbladder problems, blood clots, embolisms and death.

There are strict statutes of limitations that will prevent patients of Yaz, Yazmin and Ocella from receiving the large settlements to which they would otherwise be entitled.  Anyone that has been injured by Yaz, Yazmin or Ocella is invited to call the Foster Law Firm, or another law firm that handles these types of cases for a no cost and no pressure consultation.
